Any visit to Washington D.C. is only complete once you have books rooms at hotels near the National Mall (The Mall) and walked its paths.  Otherwise known as the “Nation’s Front Yard,” or simply “The Mall,” it is the home of iconic American monuments, museums, and galleries. Start at the Capitol building and stroll along to the National Air and Space Museum.  From there, cross over the lawn to the National Gallery of Art buildings and then the National Museum of History (the dinosaur exhibit is spectacular).

 A castle will catch your eye at this point; it is the Smithsonian Institution Building and was the first building built on the Mall.  From here, the Washington Monument stands tall in front of you, and beyond it, the reflecting pool and Lincoln Memorial.  It is easy to spend hours roaming the places listed, and it would take days to see all of the adjoining memorials and gardens.  The National Mall is a truly a monument in itself to our nation’s art and history.

Hotels Near the National Mall

There are several good hotels near the National Mall.  Experience Washington D.C. like a diplomat at the St. Regis Washington, D.C. Every American president has stayed here. The St. Regis boasts true historical ambiance, an excellent restaurant, and butler service in the suites.  For a more personal touch, try the Phoenix Park Hotel.  It is a boutique hotel located near the Capitol and the D.C. Union Terminal.  Within walking distance of the National Mall, it is historical with a touch of Irish charm.

Things to Do

The image of the Mall with its green lawns and parallel sidewalks is just a small part of the adjoining gardens, memorials, and museums.  Nearby are the unforgettable Vietnam Veterans Memorial, the Three Soldiers Statue, the Victory Garden at the National Museum of American History, and Sylvan Theater.  Of course you must visit the White House, Library of Congress, and National Postal Museum (it’s much more fun than it sounds).

Getting Around

 Parking anywhere in the vicinity of the National Mall is extremely difficult. If you’re driving, it’s best to pick hotels near the National Mall (The Mall) and leave your car in the hotel’s garage. Fortunately, public transportation in Washington D.C. is easy to use and readily available.  The DC Metro subway and DC Circulator buses will get you to the Mall fast and easy.  For the true tourist, the Big Bus Tours operate buses that allow you to hop on and off at most attractions near the Mall, as well as Arlington National Cemetery and the Pentagon.
