A Historic Institution
Originally founded in 1874, the Walter E. Washington Convention Center was the first of its kind in the capital city. Known at the time as the Northern Liberty Market, it stretched from 5th to K and L Street, it was raised in the vacuum left behind by the willful destruction of the original market area at Mount Vernon Square by Alexander Shepherd. After it fell short as a successful market area, its top floor was refitted to be the city’s first convention center in 1891, hosting its first event, the Marine Band at Christmas time who performed for 8,000 people in 1893. The building’s history continued from there, both as a convention center and market, until a fire took the roof in the late ‘40s. Though rebuilt and used as a Wax Museum until the ‘80s, it was obvious a new location was needed for the capital’s premier convention center. The center would go through one more incarnation, from 1983 to 2005, before the current building and location, just two blocks from the original site, was opened in 2003.
