Year-Round Fun Awaits at Stone Mountain Park

Make reservations at hotels near Stone Mountain Park in Georgia and be in a prime setting for your Atlanta vacation or business trip. The park is approximately 20 miles from Atlanta, so you’ll be able to enjoy sightseeing within the city while resting comfortably each night in a country setting. Be certain that you’ve planned to spend at least a couple days exploring Stone Mountain Park, as there is plenty to do and see within the grounds.

Stone Mountain Park’s History

It was in 1838 that the first tourist site was erected on Stone Mountain. A 165-foot-tall tower went up on the top of the mountain for visitors to climb and view the surrounding area. A decade later that tower toppled during a storm, and the area became a popular granite quarry and plans were developed to do a carving on one of the granite faces, though the carving would not be completed until the 1960s.

In the 1950s, the state of Georgia purchased the mountain and a scenic railway was added. By 1965, the Stone Mountain Park opened to the public and the first of the hotels near Stone Mountain Park in Georgia was constructed. Today, this area is a thriving attraction with golf courses, hotels, year-round festivals, museums, shops, and restaurants.

Five Stone Mountain Park Attractions

Once you’re in Stone Mountain Park, you’ll have a lot to do. Start your explorations with a day at Stone Mountain Lake. From 6:00 a.m. to midnight, you can fish in the lake for many varieties of fish, including bass, catfish, and crappie. At more than 360 acres in size, the lake is ideal for water activities, boating, and simply enjoying the views.

Feeling adventurous? Take the Summit Skyride to the top of Stone Mountain. A cable car travels about 825 feet in altitude ending at the top of the mountain. Along the way, you’ll see the Appalachian Mountains, Atlanta’s skyline, and the Confederate Memorial Carving.

Learn about the history of the area in Stone Mountain Museum. The glass-fronted memorial hall draws you in, and from there you can learn about the area’s granite industry, the men who carved the Confederate Memorial, and the mountain’s first settlers.

Lace up comfortable walking shoes and head up the trail that leads to the top of the mountain. This mile-long trail offers views of the city, the forests, and the mountains. It’s possible to walk the mile-long trail and then take the Summit Skyride back down, or vice versa. Once you’ve made it to the top of the mountain, there are restrooms, a place to get food and drinks, and a gift shop.

In winter months, Stone Mountain Park’s SnowZone is the place for you. Multiple activities await all ages, with snow taking center stage. Grab a tube and sled down Snow Mountain’s tubing slope. Avalanche Alley is ideal for families who want to ground together and ride a snow tube down a 400-foot slope. For smaller children, the Little Angels hill is ideal.
