From Entertainment To Education
There are plenty of iconic locations minutes from whichever of the hotels near Showboat Atlantic City you decide to make a reservation at. Yet, not many combine such a glorious past with such a noble future. The Showboat Hotel, Casino, and Bowling Center began its life in 1987, offering a gorgeous venue for visitors and guests to hit the tables, hit the lanes, or just hit the hay and do it all in unparalleled elegance and beauty. It was such a big part of the city, in fact, that’s its opening ceremonies boasted the participation of Bob Hope and Al Hirt. In its heyday, it had a 3,500-square-foot spa and state-of-the-art fitness center, two gift shops, a House of Blues, and two separate event venues – the Mardi Gras Showroom and the Mississippi Pavilion.
Over the years, the calendar for all three locations held such big names as Charo, Willie Nelson, Jack Jones, the Judds, Elvis Costello, and the White Stripes. When the public interest in bowling declined around the turn of the century, the alley was replaced with an enormous buffet and coffee shop to better serve its guests. Among its other claims to fame, the Showboat was the first casino in Atlantic City to offer up simulcast betting when it became legal in 1990. At the end of the summer of 2014, the hotel finally closed its doors, much to the surprise of its employees and regular visitors, in what was communicated as an effort to focus on the owning company’s other local properties.
Four months later, it was purchased by the Richard Stockton College of New Jersey. The goal is to create both campus housing and attractive accommodations for visitors to Stockton University and Atlantic City. The university hopes to create a full residential campus for undergraduate, graduate, and professional training programs.
