History of Charleston City Market
In 1788, Charles Pinckney granted a piece of land to the City of Charleston with the stipulation that it be used as a public marketplace from that point onwards. The low buildings between Market Hall and the water were built between 1804 and the 1830s. In 1841, the iconic Market Hall was built using plans based off the Athenian Temple of the Wingless Victory.
