Historical Landmark

The Chicago Board of Trade Building is one of Chicago’s most acclaimed architectural sites and a National Historic Landmark.  Originally built in 1821, this skyscraper was the first  building to have electricity in the city and served as the home to the exchange. In 1929, the original building was demolished after construction around it weakened the foundation.  The building, as it stands today, has an exterior of limestone, stands 45 stories, and is adorned by various statues, both inside and out, representing the trade industry it has supported for so many years.

At the main entrance you will find a large clock flanked by two guards – one holding a corn stalk and the other wheat – two of the original commodities traded within the building. Atop the building is the 300foot statue of the Greek goddess of grain – Ceres – made of aluminum and weighing in at 6,500 pounds. Over the years, the Chicago Board of Trade Building has expanded to include a south campus, interior retail space along with restaurants and outdoor gardens, and state-of-the-art amenities available for the tenants within.
