The Civic Opera House is a marvel of modern architecture. Samuel Insull hired the architecture team that designed the building, which is shaped like an enormous chair, giving rise to the nickname “Insull’s Throne.” It was opened in 1929, and it remains the second largest opera house in the country. Today, the building is the permanent home of the Lyric Opera of Chicago.

The 3,563 seat auditorium was fully restored in 1996 and is a fabulous venue for a variety of performances.
