Before you select one of the fine hotels in La Grange Park, Illinois, before you even hear the reasons why you should, take a moment to learn a bit about the village’s history and you may find that it’s enough to pique your interest alone. Like many of its neighbors, the village of La Grange Park saw industrious farmers as its first settlers. When the fire of 1872 ravaged Chicago, the locals there happily opened their doors and land to the families it left homeless. Many were so impressed with the area, they made it their permanent home.
The real story, however, was the reason the village finally became incorporated. A local name Pete Swanson decided to pad his income a bit by offering up alcoholic beverages out of his house. In short order, the rather rambunctious behavior of his customers began to upset the rest of the village, but as there wasn’t a local government, nothing could be done. Or could it? In response, the effort to incorporate was started, and by 1892, the village of La Grange Park was incorporated. It’s first order of business? Prohibit the sale of liquor in its boundaries.
