A House As Unsinkable As Its Owner
There are many worthwhile landmarks in the Mile High City, many of them large and impressive museums, but there are only a few that are completely unique to the area and represent an experience far more local and personal. With a reservation at one of the hotels near the Molly Brown House Museum in Denver, you will get to add the chance to experience an iconic Colorado and American landmark to a comfortable stay.
Originally built in the 1880s based on a beautiful mix of popular styles, the homes first owners had to sell it due to the financial fallout from the repeal of the Sherman Silver Purchase Act. Molly Brown’s husband bought it, and it was put in her name in 1898, 14 years before she would gain fame for surviving the tragedy of the Titanic. Because the famous philanthropist and activist was rarely home, she rented the house out while away, even providing a place for the governor of the state to stay while his own home was undergoing remodeling.
By the time of Molly’s death in 1932, the house had fallen into disrepair after years as a boarding house during the Depression. By 1970, it was in such a poor state that the city marked it for demolition and it seemed this bit of history would be lost forever. Fortunately, through the efforts of Historic Denver Inc, the landmark was saved and, using research, photographs and, amazingly, paintchip analysis, it was complete restored and reconstructed. Today it stands as a monument to the famous woman who owned it, offering exhibits of her life and the city during her time.
