History of Naval Station
In the early 1800’s the Key West Island was deeded over and then sold to the US. As soon as it was handed over the owner started asking the government to put a Navy base on the island.
This made it easy for the island to be protected and to stop Piracy. This Naval base and island was a Union controlled area in the Civil War. It helped to stop supplies going to the Confederate army.The base today is a hub for a variety of Coast Guard, Navy and other military training.
