The Museum’s History
There is a lot of rich history in the Oldest House and Garden Museum. While it isn’t actually the oldest house in Florida, it is definitely the oldest house in South Florida, being built in 1829. There have been a lot of disasters that led to multiple renovations of the house, including prosperity, fire, hurricanes, and hardship. The Oldest House was originally built by architect Richard W. Cussans. The original house had cedar and pine as the main building materials, using a New England Bahama House style of architecture, now sometimes referred to as Classic Revival. The house was previously located on Whitehead Street but had to be moved to Duval Street in 1834.
Inside the House and Museum
Inside the home you will find a natural decor suitable for a historic home in Key West. The walls of the home are colorful to symbolize wealth. There is a lot of furniture from the 19th century in the home, much of which belonged to the Watlington family when they lived there. There are still some family portraits in the home, an antique organ, and a hatch in the master bedroom. There are outhouses in the gardens and chamber pots located in the bedrooms. You’ll also find a rocking chair in the home with legends of being haunted and rocking on its own.
Instead of having a traditional kitchen inside the home, there is a cook house which is detached and located near the near garden. This keeps the threat of fire and extreme heat from cooking away from the home. There is a beehive wall oven, which happens to be the only one in Florida, aside from the one in the Ximenex-Fatio house in St. Augustine.
