A Surprising Backstory
If you are planning to stay in one of the hotels near DirecTV headquarters in El Segundo, CA, then you probably already know that the company is a household name for satellite television services. What you might not know is where it got its start. It all started with one name: Howard Hughes. In 1953, he created the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, transferring the famous Hughes Aircraft underneath it. After his death in 1976, HHMI was incorporated and then sold to General Motors who merged it with Delco Electronics to create the Hughes Electronic Corporation. After failing a joint venture to create a new digital television service, the company looked to satellite company USSB for new business. Hughes created a new company name and in the fall of 1994 USSB and DirecTV launched their offer. Over the next decade, the company expanded, bought out USSB and purchased other companies, and finally dropped the Hughes name all together in 2004 to become the DirecTV Group, Inc.
