Hotels near Miami Beach are ideal for enjoying the famous beach, the Art Deco district, and the collection of clubs, restaurants, and shops. While this is a thriving resort, its beginnings were far different.
From Farming to Fame
The stretch of peninsula property that would one day hold the most famous beachfront in FL was originally bought by the Henry and Charles Lum for a quarter an acre in 1870. The first building on the plot of mostly mangrove jungles was a government-sanctioned house of refuge for rehabilitating shipwreck victims. A few years later, two New Jersey entrepreneurs attempted to turn the land into profitable coconut plantations. Though the coconuts failed, one of the partners, John S. Collins, found success in his selection of crops, including avocados. Across the bay, Miami began to grow and Collins family saw a future in the resort business. Over time, with a large investment of time and money, the jungles were cleared, the land was tamed, and by 1915 the town of Miami Beach was chartered. The area officially became a city 1917, an island in 1925, was devastated by a hurricane a year later. Yet it bounced back in the ’30s with a surge of Art Deco revolution and population influx. It has since been the backdrop for big name shows and movies, like Miami Vice and Scarface, and is a premiere spot for the photo shoots of big name modeling companies.
