History of the Monterey Regional Airport (MRY)
Local communities were looking for an easier way for visitors to arrive in the Monterey area. So beginning in 1941, the Monterey Peninsula Airport District was formed and began to acquire land for the development of a local airport. However plans were interrupted by the start of World War II and the land acquired was leased by the U.S. Navy. There the Naval Auxiliary Air Station Monterey was opened. It remained in existence from May 23, 1943 until 1972. It was known as the Monterey Peninsula Airport until it was renamed on September 14, 2011 to the Monterey Regional Airport.
