The Quartier used to be the Red Light District in the 1800s, the spot for unique taverns. The Quartier des Spectacles is quite new, started in 2007. Old buildings have been repurposed and new buildings show off the rich architectural creativity. The purpose of the Quartier is to contribute to the vitality of this robust city, promoting creative endeavors and supporting the film and design crafts.

Though most of the area is devoted to indoor and outdoor venues for entertainment, there are also lofts and condos for residents and several hotels for visitors.
