The CBD was called the American Sector in the early 1800s after the Louisiana Purchase brought this area into the United States. It has been a vigorous area, attracting investors, and developers from its earlier days. Canal Street, considered the dividing line between the CBD and the French Quarter, has been one of the primary shopping districts for the entire city for decades, home to a number of major department stores. The area is one of the few in the New Orleans area that wasn’t flooded due to Hurricane Katrina.
