A Revitalization of Downtown
Named Panama City on 1906, the downtown area flourished with the development of the waterfront. Piers were home to a growing industry of commercial shipping, and there was also a local post office and city jail. Schoolhouses were developed as well as churches, and with the connected of the Atlanta and St. Andrew railroads, the city was opened to those larger, thriving cities up north. Businesses grew and Panama City truly thrived.
However as time passed, Panama City was in desperate need of a little pick-me-up. A Panama City CRA was formed to oversee the revitalization of the area. In 1999, the Streetscape program began on Harrison Avenue, giving the street a new, modern look with sidewalks, improved lighting, and lovely landscaping. Completed in 2010, a new parking lot was built behind the Martin Theatre at the corner of 4th Street and Grace. As the looks and feel of the downtown area changes, be sure to come back often to see all the newest improvements.
