A Brief History of Place de la Madeleine Paris
The church was originally commissioned in 1757. Construction didn’t start on the building for nearly a decade. Its progress was short-lived, halting just one year later in 1764. The original architect, Pierre Contant d’Ivry, died in 1777 and the project was picked up by Guillaume-Martin Couture. He razed what was already built and started fresh. His design featured the 52 Corinthian columns that the structure is known for today. Unfortunately, his progress was limited as well. In 1780, revolution broke out and once again progress ground to a halt until 1806.
In 1806, Napoleon held a contest to decide the architect that would finish the project he had named the “Temple de la Gloire de la Grande Armee” or Temple to the Glory of the Great Army. After a winner was chosen, he then overrode the decision, placing Pierre-Alexander Vignon at the helm. He once again, razed most of the structure, but kept the column design intact. Drawing inspiration from the Maison Carree in Nimes, he worked on the church until his death in 1828. His assistant, Philippe Joseph Henri Lemaire, picked up progress a year later, and finally, the church was officially consecrated in 1842—nearly 100 years after the original commissioning of the site.
