A Dedication to Education

The hotels near Arizona State University in Phoenix will give you convenient access to an institute that has had a long, proud history of focusing on the benefits of higher learning with an eye towards the importance of inclusion and the power of progress.  It’s origin hails all the way back to 1885 when the Arizona Territory Legislature passed an act to have a school built for training teachers.  Named the Territorial Normal School, it started as only a four-room schoolhouse offering diplomas for high school students and teaching certificates for graduates.

By 1925, it became the Tempe State Teacher’s College and then, four years later, the Arizona State Teachers College.  By this time, the school was only offering admission to graduates and increased its building count and acreage, adding in the landmark Palm Walk.  From 1930 forward, ASU became what is today, getting its full current name in 1958 and adding the Polytechnic Campus in Mesa and West Campus and Downtown Campus in Phoenix.

Currently, the school offers more 250 majors to undergraduates and over 100 graduate programs.  It has also expanded its influence beyond its undergraduate and graduate programs into the world of research, becoming an appointed member of the Universities Research Association with the addition of facilities like the Biodesign Institute, Herberger Research Institute, and the International Institute for Species Exploration.  These institutes have provided leading research into cancer treatment, the Human Genome Project, and global sustainability.  And just to make sure you don’t think for a minute that the university isn’t well rounded, it has won 23 national championships in sports ranging from golf to baseball to track to wrestling and provides gorgeous games at the Sun Devil Stadium.
