The San Antonio Station is a train station located in San Antonio, Texas, on the eastern part of the downtown area. It is home to the Amtrak trains that goes through the city multiple times a day. There are two Amtrak train lines that use the San Antonio Station, including the Texas Eagle and the Sunset Limited. These two trains are both from Los Angeles, California, but they split at this station. The Texas Eagle goes to Chicago, Illinois, while the Sunset Limited goes to New Orleans, Louisiana. There is also an Amtrak Thruway Motorcoach at the San Antonio Station that goes to McAllen, Brownsville, and Harlingen, Texas.
History of the San Antonio Station
The Amtrak station in San Antonio was previously located in a smaller depot, built in 1902 and called the Sunset Station. This train station was designed by Daniel J. Patterson in a Spanish Mission-style and was on the National Register for Historic Places in 1975. In the 1990s, it moved to a larger station, though is still considered a historic landmark. It is now at a larger depot and operated by the Austin Steam Train Association.
Things to Keep in Mind
There are some things you should remember and keep in mind when you are traveling through the San Antonio Station and aboard the Amtrak trains. First of all, always stand behind the yellow line when a train is approaching. This will keep you safe on the platform when a train is moving. Do not attempt to enter or exit a train until it has come to a complete stop. All smoking is prohibited at the station and on the trains, including electronic cigarettes. You also may not ride a skateboard or bicycle while in the station. If you plan to bring your bicycle on the train or park it at the station, you must walk with it.
