The History of Tower of the Americas
Commissioned to local designer and architect O’Neil Ford as a themed structure for the 1968 World’s Fair, the Tower of the Americas took nearly two years to construct. At the time of its completion, the tower claimed the record for the tallest observation tower in the United States. This record stood for nearly 30 years until the Stratosphere Tower in Las Vegas claimed the title.
However, the tower nearly wasn’t completed at all. While placing the top house containing the observation on the tower, a cable snapped, leaving the deck precariously balanced on the tower. Fortunately, the issue was resolved and the tower opened right in time for HemisFair 1968.
