It took workers approximately four years to build the Golden Gate Bridge. It opened in May 1937 and has only closed a handful of times since then and never for more than a few hours. Today the bridge six-lane bridge operates as toll bridge for all the southbound lanes. Additionally, there are east and west pedestrian sidewalks that are open to both people who are walking or jogging and cyclists at certain hours of the day.
