Catch a Show
St. George, Utah is home to the beautiful, historic St. George Opera House. Originally built in 1864 by the St. George Gardeners Club, the St. George Opera House was designed as a wine cellar. Grapes were a huge source of income for the newly forming community and so the building was created to hold grapes and process wine. The St. George Opera House was built into the hillside, with most of the structure below ground, which is ideal for wine making and proper storage conditions.
However, as wine demand lessened, the building was sold to the Social Hall Company and refurbished to hold up to 400 patrons. In 1886, its first opera was hosted. Today the historic building continues its proud tradition of the arts. Home to productions such as the West Side Story and Arsenic and Old Lace, the St. George Opera House is an important piece of St. George history.
