This Way to Prehistoric Times

Located above the Santa Clara Creek are the prehistoric rock drawings left behind for millennia by the Anasazi Indians. Native to the area from around 200 B.C. to 1250 A.D., these drawings outdate almost everything in the United States of America. These drawings are truly incredible, a key piece in the history of America and life before the settlers. They are definitely worth the trip, though the hiking can be quite arduous. Three trails lead to the drawings, but be sure to lace on your hiking boots because you have some climbing over rocks to do to get there. Follow the Tukpesti Trail, the Tava’atsi Trail, or the Anasazi Trail. If you are hiking with children, the Tava’atsi Trail is the easiest and is just a half-mile climb to the location of the petroglyphs. And while you are so close to these ancient drawings you can touch them, tempting as it may be, please do not do so. It is best for their preservation to be left alone. When you stay at one of the hotels near Ivins Petroglyphs, St. George, UT, you can stay close to the trails for repeated visits to this incredible site.
