History of Grant’s Farm

Originally owned by Frederick Dent, he gifted 80 acres to his daughter Julia and her new husband Ulysses S. Grant as a wedding gift. On the property in 1855, President Grant built his four-room cabin, “Hardscrabble.” In 1907, the home was purchased by August Busch Sr. and was moved to its current location, about a mile from its original spot. In 1977, its restoration was completed to its current condition. It is one of the only structures remaining having been built by a president prior to taking office. On Grant’s Farm there are also the Busch’s ancestral home as well as White Haven, the family home of Julia Grant in which she and Grant lived between the Mexican and Civil Wars.
