The First of Its Kind
To keep up with the purchase of land by its rival, the Simpson’s department store chain bought up 20 acres off Highway 401 in 1958. A mall was proposed and designed and retailers were chosen to fill it based on a broad public appeal. The doors opened on February 26th, 1964, and at over a million square feet of gross leasable space, it was not only the biggest shopping center in Canada, it was one of the largest in the world. It was so big and so integral in fact that construction did not begin until plans were solidified for the creation of an expressway to service it, one that is now known as Allen Road. And not only was it unique for being the first Canadian mall to feature to major department stores, it was built with a delivery system of allowing the trucks to drive under the mall and deliver to the basement of the shops. And now you too can enjoy the result of all that ingenuity and hard work when you book a room at one of the hotels near the Yorkdale Shopping Centre in Toronto.
