A Brief History of Hampton

From the early 1600s, settlers came to Hampton looking to start new lives. They settled near a Kecoughtan village and named their new home Point Comfort. Eventually, they moved up river to settle Jamestown. The homes remaining in Point Comfort became Hampton.

Through the years, Hampton has been instrumental in battles and history, both good and bad. It was the place the first slave ship landed. It became the location for Fort Monroe, a site never finished, and Fort Wool, and saw young Robert E. Lee serve as a lieutenant. Fort Monroe would become home to a number of slaves looking to gain their freedom.

Hampton was the home of the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics and Langley Field, home of the Army Air Corps, renamed the U.S. Air Force in 1947. In 1948, Langley Field was renamed Langley Air Force Base and today houses the Virginia Air & Space Center.
